El Salvador's food is one of the most popular and lesser known, but equally important ingredients in Salvadoran cuisine is corn. In El Salvador there is a fairly normal style with masa (corn flour) and the dough is filled with meat, usually chicken or pork. Without a doubt, the most famous Salvadoran dish is the thick tortilla stuffed with cheese, beans, pork and other ingredients.
Various soups and stews form the main meal, often accompanied by empanadas, puppets, tamales and more. In El Salvador, enchiladas are wrapped in tostadas and usually served with bean or bean soup and en chilada.
The same yuca, frita and chicharron are found throughout El Salvador, but the size, shape and colour of the vegetables and meat will change. In Nicaragua and El Salvador, vegetables are surprisingly low in the meals, such as shredded cabbage topped with one or two slices of tomato.
